      Russell joined South Omaha Aerie No. 154 in 1947 to attend the free dances at the Aerie. His first assignment was as Entertainment Chairman. He became Aerie President in 1962 and was elected Nebraska State President ten years later. He served as his home Aerie as Trustee for fifteen years, Secretary for ten years and Aerie Bulletin Editor for four years.

      Nationally, Russell was appointed Regional President in 1973-74. He went on to become the Grand Chaplain and served on the Board of Grand Trustees for four years before becoming Grand Worthy President. He was appointed West Central Regional Director of both the Max Baer Heart Fund and the Jimmy Durante Children's Fund and also as Chairman of the Hall of Fame Committee.

       Russell's wife, Darlene instigated and has handled the "Talent Show" at the Grand Aerie Conventions.

Sad to say, Darlene passed away Feb.19th, 2005
