2 April PGWP Larry Hanshaw, 1935-2024 April 2, 2024 By The Fraternal Order of Eagles General PGWP, Larry Hanshaw, Iowa 0 The Grand Aerie is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Past Grand Worthy President Larry Hanshaw (1935-2024). Larry joined the Fraternal Order of Eagles in 1957 in Fairfield, Iowa, rising to the Worthy President position in just five years. In 1973-1974, he served as the Iowa State Worthy President, bringing in the largest membership class to that point in Iowa’s history. He was appointed West Central Regional President three years later. In 1979, Larry transferred to Des Moines Aerie #109, which he remained a member of until his passing. He served Des Moines for many years as a Ritual Advisor until starting his journey through the Grand Aerie in 1993. Larry was installed as Grand Worthy President for the 1999-2000 term at the International Convention in Nashville, Tenn. He listed his installation among his proudest moments as an Eagle, along with being selected for the Iowa State Aerie Hall of Fame and the Grand Aerie Hall of Fame. He was retired from the Iowa National Guard, where he held the position of Military Personnel Sergeant and enjoyed traveling the Eagles’ jurisdiction and meeting his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife, Pam, and their children and grandchildren. George passed away yesterday after a valiant battle with heart disease. PGWP Jerry Sullivan Passes Away at 72 It is with great sadness we must report the passing of Past Grand Worthy President Jerry Sullivan. Jerry was a proud and dedicated Eagle who joined the organization as a charter member of Fredericksburg, Va., Aerie #4123 in 1985, where he often served as Santa Claus for the annual Children’s Christmas Party. He continued to serve the Fredericksburg Eagles in various capacities throughout his time as an Eagle and maintained dual memberships at Spotsylvania #4391, Williamsburg #4548, Sunnyslope #2957 and Culpeper #4551. In the 90’s, Jerry rose through various local and state level chairs before being installed as the Virginia State Worthy President for the 2002-03 term. At the 2007 International Convention in Spokane, Wash., he first became a Grand Aerie Officer, holding the position of Grand Conductor. He progressed through the Grand Aerie for several years before finally reaching the pinnacle of the F.O.E., serving as Grand Worthy President for the 2016-17 term. PGWP Mel Fry, 1938-2024 We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of Past Grand Worthy President Melvin L. Fry (August 25, 1938 – April 30, 2024). Mel joined Carlisle, Pa., Aerie #1299 in 1961, where he remained a member for the entirety of his time as an Eagle. He held several offices in the Carlisle Aerie over the years including Worthy President for the 1985-1986 term. First Time Proposer Contest Winners Announced Earlier this year, the Grand Aerie Membership Department held their inaugural First Time Proposer contest from Dec. 1 – Feb. 28, offering $250 to Aerie and Auxiliary winners from each of our 16 regions. Each first time proposer during the period received an entry into the contest, with the winner in each region selected at random. The Membership Department is proud to announce this year’s winners: Membership Department Announces Re-Enrollment, Early Bird Contest Winners Earlier this year, the Grand Aerie Membership Department held a pair of contests geared toward growing our Membership. The Re-enrollment contest was held from March 1-May 31 with members receiving one entry for each re-enrollee they sign during the period. Winners will receive $250. The Early Bird contest was held from April 15-May 31 with the Aeries and Auxiliaries achieving the highest percentage of renewals and the highest number of renewals receiving a $1,000 credit on their next Per-Capita Tax payment.
