24 January Montgomery, West Virginia - January 2019 January 24, 2019 By The Fraternal Order of Eagles West Virginia 0 Kanawha Eagles #1040 held a Christmas party for 350 area children at the local high school on December 16. Members wrapped presents and prepared fruit and treat bags for children. Pizza and juice were served in the cafeteria and a special appearance was made by Santa. The children had the opportunity to visit with Santa and were given candy canes After the presents were given, there were drawings for bicycles for 20 girls and for 20 boys. Each attendee was presented a ticket upon arrival for the bicycle drawings. The total cost for the party was $7,000. From the January 2019 People Helping People newsletter. Related Articles Clarksburg, West Virginia - July 2019 Clarksburg Auxiliary #2353’s Past Madam President Marsha Whisler was recently honored as “Volunteer of the Month” by the Miley Legal group and WBOY TV. Marsha is retired and very active in her local auxiliary, but she spends most of her time crocheting plastic mats for homeless veterans in her area. Eagle members and other friends save their grocery bags and give them to Marsha. She cuts them in strips, ties them together in a ribbon which she crochets into the mats. It takes between 600 and 800 bags to make one mat three feet by six feet. Members of auxiliary #2353 help Marsha deliver them to the local Lewis A. Johnson Veterans Hospital to distribute to their homeless veterans. Marsha was awarded a check for $500, which she donated to the homeless veterans. Although Marsha has been legally blind for several years she enjoys many benefits of being an Eagle member. She is a 30 year member of Clarksburg and has been active the entire time, serving as an officer, including Madam President and on many committees. She attends auxiliary meetings, locally, and around the state, and is the membership chair. Sutherlin, Virginia - January 2017 Piedmont Eagles #4420 made their annual visit to Pittsylvania County School Board Office on Monday, Nov. 21, to deliver 26 dinners for distribution to families for Thanksgiving. Members of the Eagles shopped for, packed the dinners in boxes, then loaded them into the group’s trailer for the ride to Chatham. Fredericksburg, Virginia - May 2019 In recognition for her 20+ years of service to her community through her work with the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Sue Limerick, member of Spotsylvania Auxiliary #4391, was presented the Distinguished Community Service award at the Annual NSWCDD Honorary Awards Ceremony in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Alexandria, Virginia - May 2019 For the last 25 years, Alva Aerie #871 has participated in a walk dedicated to the memory of Past Worthy President Bubba Merker who suffered a major heart attack and passed away at a young age. Over these last 25 years, #871 has donated a total of $200,000 to the Max Baer Heart fund. - Lawrence Manchio, life member of Alva Aerie #871 turned 101 on April 24, 2019. He has been a member of the Aerie for 76 years, and attributes his longevity and exceptional health to the Mediterranean diet, remaining physically active, and drinking a glass of red wine daily. One his 100th birthday, the Grand Aerie awarded Manchio a plaque to recognize his milestone. Staunton, Virginia - May 2019 The Mason Dixon Conference proudly presented the Grand President-Elects a check of $6,500 each to help off-set their expenses for the upcoming year as Grand Presidents. This year the Conference was held at the Elliot's Knob Aerie #680. The Mason Dixon Conference is comprised of 7 states (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, New York and West Virginia) The Conference has helped the incoming presidents over 25 years. The Mason Dixon Conference relies on money collected from the sale of lottery tickets but mostly from donations and raffles, which takes place on the first Friday and Saturday of April. Culpeper, Virginia - June 2019 Newly instituted Culpeper Eagles #4551 participated in their first Culpeper Relay for Life and was able to raise $2,172 – with a total of $128,463 raised during the relay.
